What is GIS
GIS stands for geographic information systems and is a form of information technology system that is designed to capture, store, manage, retrieve, manipulate, analyze, and display all kinds of geographic and spatial data through paper maps, reports, and online interactive mapping applications. GIS involves using mapping software, hardware, and databases in order to solve location based questions such as "What is located near here" or "Where can I find a particular feature."

The role of the Tazewell County GIS department is to provide the public with an accurate way to identify spatial and geographic information within the county. The GIS Department creates, coordinates, and manages the collection of spatial data for multiple county departments and municipalities through our enterprise GIS system in order to support ongoing projects, communication, and decision making.
History of GIS in Tazewell County
The Tazewell County GIS program was originally established within the Tazewell County Assessment Office. By 2006, every Illinois County was required to assess all farm ground according to compliances which required a digital mapping system. A fee was allowed to attach to every recorded document in all Counties of the State, which became the initial funding mechanism for a GIS program.
The original purpose of GIS as an Assessment Office tool has now been widely surpassed, to become a robust tool enhancing professional abilities of both the public and private sectors.
